The Letter of Intent on cooperation in the field of biotechnology development in The Pomorskie Voivodeship was signed on April 15th, 2008 in the Head Office of the Marshal. Baltic Center of Biotechnology and Innovative Diagnostics will be founded within the project that will facilitate high-level biotech research in the region.

Among the Signatories of the Letter of Intent were: the Rectors of the three main Pomeranian Universities: University of Gdansk, Medical University of Gdansk and Technical University of Gdansk, Marshal of the Pomorskie Voivodeship, representatives of the City of Gdansk and City of Sopot, Pomeranian Special Economic Zone, Gdynia Innovation Centre, Centre of Technology Transfer in Gdansk, Gdansk Institute of Market Economics. The letter was also signed by the representatives of leading Pomeranian biotech companies and several SMEs operating in the region.

The Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdansk and Medical University of Gdansk, an active member of ScanBalt, was also one of the signatories of the Letter. It is a unique academic institution, merging the power and competency of two Universities in the Pomorskie region for research development and education in the field of biotechnology.

Invitation of ScanBalt as the only one international organization to sign the letter was a sign of appreciation for ScanBalt activities in the Pomorskie voivodeship and the whole region.

The Signatories believe that this initiative will facilitate proper conditions for biotechnology development and its use in business and the public service sector. It will also create the platform that will help to cooperate and coordinate activities supporting development of biotechnology and its application in The Pomorskie Voivodeship (including pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food companies).

The Signatories declare their will to cooperate in:

  • Creation of the best conditions for development of the research institutions and biotechnological companies by fostering initiatives like Baltic Centre of Biotechnology and Innovative Diagnostics. Estimated costs of establishing this institution are approx. 45mln Euro, all three mentioned Universities together with the Office of Marshal of the Pomorskie Voivodeship will apply for the EU funds.
  • Promotion of cooperation between educational – research networks and business networks by supporting the partnership that is going to develop cluster initiative based on biotechnology,
  • Dissemination of the knowledge of biotechnology and its possible applications”.
