Final conclusions for the project “Enhanced Control of Potato mop-top virus” (ScanBalt Agro biotechnology network)

The Baltic Sea region project ‘Enhanced Control of Potato mop-top virus (PMTV) in the Nordic and Baltic Sea Region’ organised an open mini-symposium at University of Helsinki, Finland, on February 17 (2009).

The 50 participants represented research institutes and universities as well as state plant inspection authorities and private companies. The surveys carried out in Nordic and Baltic countries, Poland and north-western Russia in 2005-2008 showed that PMTV is established in the field soils only in Nordic countries. Biology, diagnostics, breeding for resistance and measures to limit spread of PMTV were discussed. Three invited presentations from the Czech Republic, Scotland and USA completed the overall picture underlining complexity which is characteristic of symptom expression and control of PMTV. The 20 oral presentations inspired lively discussions. The project was financially supported by the Nordic Joint Committee for Agricultural Research (NKJ no. 122).
