Latvian researchers develop new method of producing Biodiesel

Latvian researchers at Riga Technical University have developed a new technology: REE biodiesel production (Rapeseed oil fatty acid Ethyl Ester). REE is produced from rapeseed oil and dehydrated ethanol, in presence of the catalyst potassium hydroxide. The product is ecologically clean.

The novelty of the technology is that usual, toxic methanol is substituted by environmentally friendly ethanol, which is produced from renewable raw materials – corn, sugar beet, maize, sugarcane, etc. The technology tested and is available also for other vegetable oils, such as soybean, sunflower, maize, etc. The technology is available for demonstration in laboratory.

The researchers are looking for industrial partners, interested in approval and implementation of the technology in industrial manufacturing.
