TBD-Biodiscovery: A ScanBalt BioRegion Innovation Competition Winner gone global

TBD-Biodiscovery in 2012 won the ScanBalt BioRegion innovation competition “Get ready for investment”. Today the company successfully has entered into global markets and new market segments.

In 2012 TBD-Biodiscovery was a winner of the ScanBalt BioRegion innovation competition “Get ready for investment”. The aim of the competition was to support winners to achieve a proof-of-concept, help them with the business plan preparation and to clarify market opportunities and to develop the idea towards a more mature business case.

The motivation for choosing TBD-Biodiscovery as a winner was that it acted on a niche market and had prospects of generating reasonable sales in the close future. The prize consisted in coaching tailored according to the specific needs of the company.

Expected growth proved to be correct

As a reaction to being awarded Olga Tšubrik, head of business development at TBD-Biodiscovery stated that she expected TBD-Biodiscovery to be a bigger company with a wider product portfolio.

“We will still have small-scale production, but also constant production of ingredients for oncological products and ingredients for new and efficient drugs. By 2018, we hope to have an extensive partner network and a wider customer base consisting of also bigger companies.”

This statement proved to be right on the spot.

Since winning the award in 2012 the development of TBD-Biodiscovery has been a story of success. The company started off with providing services for pharma and biotech. This has lead to new challenges such as contribution to modern anti-cancer drug development, innovative diagnostics methods and smart solutions for chemical and agrochemical industry. Today TBD-Biodiscovery has partners worldwide: EU, Switzerland, United States, Israel and Russia.

TBD-Biodiscovery is an independent Estonian company, founded in 2006 by private capital. The business started with contract services and grew up to small scale API/HPAPI manufacturing and development of their own products portfolio which includes Ultrahigh grade D-Luciferin, fine chemicals and active ingredients.

TBD-Biodiscovery also provides a number of contract services for biotech, pharma, drug development and agrochemical companies. TBD-Biodiscovery has certificate of GMP compliance to manufacture non-sterile active pharmaceutical ingredients by chemical synthesis and has successfully passed audits by customers and State Agency of Medicines.

About the innovation competition

The innovation competition was part of the project BSHR HealthPort coordinated by ScanBalt and co-funded by Interreg. The responsible organiser for the innovation competition was the Finnish regional development agency Culminatum. HealthPort formed part of the EUSBSR flagship HealthRegion.
