European ‘CDC’ – Official Start Up Event
On the 27th of September Stockholm hosted the official launch of the new European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. In a world which requires more effective surveillance of disease, better responses to epidemics, and better disease prevention the new Centre will play a central role. The Centre is supported by new European legislation, signed in April 2004, and will begin work in 2005.
David Byrne, the European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, emphasised the European model that the centre would follow. It will seek to network and build on the efforts of national institutes. Stockholm will act as a hub of experts from the European, and neighbouring, countries.
ScanBalt will publish news concerning the centre, when it is available.
