Finland steers a course to boost innovation and the markets driving it
Finland steers Europe’s R&D and innovation train all the way to 2007.
Finnish innovation and research has featured fairly regularly in news reports in recent years. Now Cordis takes the opportunity to examine the Nordic country’s R&D policy agenda during its six months at the helm of the rotating EU Presidency.
For some time now, Finland has enjoyed an international reputation for top-level scientific expertise. Thanks to rigorous national science and technology reform, as well as a knowledge-intensive phase of economic growth in the early 1990s, the country now boasts a greater proportion of researchers than any other EU Member State.
Now with the reigns of the EU Presidency in its hands, Finland has a chance to pass on some of its insights into how best to use knowledge to achieve the Union’s revised Lisbon goal of generating more jobs and growth. The Finnish have launched a dedicated ‘R&D and Innovation Information Service’, hosted on the CORDIS server, to outline its goals during its presidential tenure and share its experiences.
