ScanBalt countries rank high on Science and Technology indicators
Finland & Iceland
In Iceland (2.24%) and Finland (2.09%) more than 2% of all persons employed worked as researchers in 2003. ( EU-25 is 1.44% ). Within the business enterprise sector Finland took the lead, with researchers accounting for 1.13%.
Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia
Latvia (53%) and Lithuania (48%) employ the highest proportion of female researchers in 2003 in the EU.
In Latvia almost 60% of the Business Enterprise Sector researchers are active in small companies (0 to 49) employees, showing by far the highest proportion for this company size class.
For almost two-thirds of EU 25 countries, the largest proportion of female researchers is found in the Government (GOV) sector, with Estonia (60%) and Latvia (56%) scoring the top values.
Denmark, Norway and Sweden
R&D personnel as a percentage of total employment: Iceland and Finland are again in the lead for both 2002 and 2003, with values above 3%. Sweden, Denmark, and Norway follow with values above 2% and Germany, all exceeded the EU-25 average in 2003.
Germany
Germany tops with 80% of the researchers in the business enterprise sector are employed in large enterprises. In larger EU countries such as Germany, Italy, France and the United Kingdom, more than 60% of the researchers in the business enterprise sector are employed in large enterprises with more than 500 employees.
