ScanBalt Discussed in Nature Article on European Networks

The June 5 issue of Nature discusses the development of the newest biotech network to emerge in Europe – Eurobiocluster South, which is a consortium of regional authorities, cities and universities in Spain, France, Switzerland and Germany. The article includes the challenges which face this new network and raises the interesting point that problems often mirror those of the EU, but on a smaller scale.

ScanBalt is discussed in a positive light, with a brief mention of the secrets of its growing success. On a more general note, the ‘top down approach’ (which ScanBalt has rejected in favour of a more grass roots approach) is critised, as the communication between companies and organisations, rather than overarching coordination, is seen to be of paramount importance.

The whole article (written by Sabine Louet, Volume 23, Number 6, June 2005 Nature) can be read here.
