Seminar Summary: Role of Regions in Competitiveness, Open Days Conference, Brussels

Competitiveness: Role of the Regions in Research and Innovation
– Examples from the Baltic Sea Region

The Seminar took place in the Hanse-Office on the 11th Oct. 2005 in the time from 11.30
– 13.30. About 70 persons attended the event. After the welcome by the representative
of the Hanse-Office the moderator Mr Edward Cameron, Director of European Regions
Research and Innovation Network (ERRIN), introduced into the topic of the seminar.

ScanBalt was represented by Borge Diderichsen. Other speakers included Werner Wobbe from DG research and Matti Ollinkari from the city of Helsinki.

The conclusion was that:

– Regions should play the role of a facilitator in research and innovation
– Regional specialisation and excellence should be promoted and interlinked with metaregional networks.
