Trayss Prime Management Training Week for Scientists
Trayss Prime Management Training Week for Scientists
May 4th to May 9th 2008, Berlin Area, Germany
Does desk work eat up most of your research time? Are your projects getting out of hand? Feeling helpless in front of grant applications? You do not know how and why to protect your know-how? Then attending the TRAYSS PRIME Management Training Week may help you!
At the beginning of their independent careers, young scientists are faced with a multitude of new and unaccustomed tasks for which they were not trained. These tasks include the acquisition and management of research funds, management of complex research projects on the organizational, scientific, communicational and financial levels as well as handling of intellectual property issues and economic exploitation of research results.
A special Management Training Week organized by the EU-funded project TRAYSS PRIME now offers the opportunity for young scientists from different countries to acquire knowledge on these important aspects in a condensed and interactive form.
This workshop is targeted at junior group leaders, postdocs, advanced PhD students and other scientists in the life science sector in the Baltic Sea region who wish to improve their skills in scientific management.
Workshop Topics:
“How to write a successful FP7 proposal”
Experts from EU counselling companies, EU organizations and from industry will provide insights into the optimal use of funding opportunities provided by the 7th Framework Programme, starting with the identification of suitable calls and programmes, the search for project partners and the building of research consortia and finally going into details of the proposal and evaluation procedure. The workshop includes extensive hands-on exercises, thus giving the participants the opportunity to directly apply and deepen the knowledge gained. After finishing the workshop, participants will be able to navigate the “jungle” of EU research funding and to prepare grant applications within FP7 more effectively and successfully.
“Project Management for Scientists”
The project management workshop introduces definitions and principles of project management, such as phases and contents of a project, project planning, steering and controlling, team work issues, as well as risk management. In addition, special topics such as time management and conflict management will be covered. Case studies and a high involvement of the participants ensure an interesting and hands-on workshop. Participants will encounter managerial tools that make the daily administrative duties easier, give more flexibility and preserve financial and time budgets – thus releasing resources for research tasks.
“Commercial exploitation and IP management in biotechnology”
This workshop will be covered by European experts from the field of intellectual property management and technology transfer. Participants will study the pathway from basic research to commercial exploitation as commonly practiced in the biotechnology industry. Real-life case studies implement the recently attained knowledge. The participants will also learn the possibilities of protecting and utilising their own know-how, e.g. with the constitution of IP value, the formulation and implementation of an IP strategy and the presentation of a patent example.
Additional Events:
In addition to the workshops and to get real life impressions apart from the lectures, an excursion to a biotechcompany in the area is planned, as well as “fire-side discussions” on generally important topics such as e.g. bioethics.
