ScanBalt Campus sets-up student exchange between St. Petersburg and Rostock

ScanBalt Campus sets-up student exchange between St. Petersburg and Rostock.

A pilot initiative has made student exchange possible between the Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy at Rostock university and the Institute of Experimental Medicine in St. Petersburg, the academic partner being the Chemico-Pharmaceutical Academy (CPA), St. Petersburg.

The first 2 Russian students to travel to Rostock were Elena Mirgorodskaya from the Biotechnology Faculty and Eugenia Delyagina from the Pharmaceutical Faculty. The two were selected among many candidates by the CPA.  The two students have finished their third year of the 5-year programme at the Chemico-Pharmaceutical Academy. Currently the students are in Rostock and preparing their return to Sct. Petersburg by the 1st of September.

Professor Gustav Steinhoff, who provided the research training to the 2 students in his lab in non-viral drug/gene transfer nanotechnology and stem cell research, says: “We are very happy about the stay of the two excellent students, who did an excellent job and will return next week to St. Petersburg.”

The pilot initiative is possible due to the initiative of Prof. Steinhoff, head of the Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy at Rostock university and Professor Vadim Vasilyev, head of the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Institute of Experimental Medicine in Sct.Petersburg.

Professor Vadim Vasilyev yesterday said: “We hope that the bilateral exchange will go on, and perhaps later on we can will involve a third and other parties.”

The base for the student exchange has been formed at ScanBalt meetings in Copenhagen, Oslo and Hamburg/Rostock. The final decision to start this bilateral exchange was made when Prof. Gustav Steinhoff visited St. Peterburg last June. Here CPA was invited as a partner, with the Biotechnological and the Pharmaceutical Faculties.

Before travelling the students received short instructions at the Department of Molecular Genetics of IEM on some approaches in modern genetic engineering. The great bulk of practice is acquired in Rostock.

The exchange is thus facilitated by two academic structures (University in Rostock and Chemico-Pharmaceutica Academy in St. Petersburg) and two scientific structures the Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Therapy at Rostock university and the Institute of Experimental Medicine in Sct. Petersburg. The exchange is supported in CPA by the Rector, Professor Nina Kareva. Practicalities and selection of candidates was handled by Assoc. Prof. Olga Kudritskaya. The German side covers the expenses connected with the stay of the two Russian students, while the travel expenses are covered by the Russian side.
